Max Mustard is the blissful VR rebirth of a popular 32-bit genre

- I'm not sure how to express how happy I was to see Max Mustard appear on my Meta Quest 3 displays for the first time.

- It's a 90s platformer with bright colors, oddball adversaries,

- endearing animations, a plunger gun, and jet boots—yet it's making its debut in 2024, in virtual reality, no less.

- A virtual reality platformer may seem peculiar at first, but consider how the platformer genre has developed.

-  Super Mario Bros. and Pitfall, two 2D side-scrolling games, are among the earliest instances of the genre.

-  A few decades later, the idea would be totally transformed into 3D space by 3D platformers like Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, and Sonic Adventure.

- When you consider it, bringing the genre into virtual reality makes the most sense because there isn't any 4D.

- You may now glance around the environment, more accurately approximate 3D depth, and even interact with the virtual world with your hands in addition to simply moving your avatar.

- This technique has previously been shown to work in the finest Meta Quest games, such as the Moss series, Ghost Giant,

- and Lucky's Tale, but the original PSVR's AstroBot Rescue Mission remains the benchmark for VR platformers.
