Design and Build Quality
The GP68 is another sturdily built MSI laptop. The sturdy gray metal lid and metal interior give a premium feel, and there is minimal flex even when applying significant force on the keyboard and lid. Surprisingly the one-finger opening is quite easy to accomplish and the hinges deliver stability, limiting screen movements during typing frenzies.
Although a bit thicker compared to other 16-inch laptops for gaming, the GP68 makes room for the powerful RTX 4080 with enough cooling space. But portability suffers with the large 330-watt power adapter. While slimmer GaN chargers might be more expensive, they can provide a more convenient travel option.
Performance and Keyboard
The last-gen processor used by the GP68 does not affect its speed. The per-key RGB backlight on the keyboard, unusual in less expensive versions, provides a bit of personalization. The keys, including the tactile WASD keys, have a feel that is clicky and satisfying. The touchpad may be smooth and tactile, but it lacks the clickable corners.
Connectivity and Ports
On the left, the laptop features Type-C Thunderbolt 4, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack, with USB Type-A ports (both Gen 1 and Gen 2) on the right. The rear posts an amazing 2.5-gigabit Ethernet port, but the location of the port is not necessarily the best choice for the users.
Configuration and Upgradability
Entering the GP68 requires removing 13 Phillips-head screws, exposing an elegant internal layout. The laptop has an upgradeable design that is accessible with RAM slots, M.2 slots, and a Wi-Fi 6E card. Despite upgrades, the ease of access to these components discourages the overall upgradeability score.
Battery Life and Software Features
The GP68 features a 4-cell 90Wh battery, powered by MSI Center software that controls its battery performance modes. The Display Power Saver option saves power by automatically reducing the refresh rate of the screen when not plugged in. The battery life is adequate, about 5.5 hours in playback tests of YouTube videos.
Thermals and Cooling
Two fans and three heat pipes provide powerful thermal management for the GP68. MSI Center software lets the users switch between various modes of operation, extreme settings involving cooler boost. In spite of this, although the internal temperatures do not change, the laptop acquires an external cooling pad during the stress tests.
Display Quality
The weakness of the GP68 can be found in its screen. Available in either 16:With 10 2560 by 1600 240Hz or 1920 by 1200 144Hz options, the FHD+ screen is underwhelming for a high-end RTX 4080. This may be disappointing for gamers, particularly in current fast-paced games.
Gaming Performance and Pricing
The good performance of the GP68 can be seen in gaming, where it provides excellent results in different games. However, the limitation of only 1920 by 1200 screens restricts the full power of the RTX 4080.
