The Jacksonville Jaguars are trying to strengthen their quarterback position now that Trevor Lawrence is out of commission.
On Tuesday, the Jaguars declared their intention to sign veteran quarterback John Wolford. For the time being, Wolford, 29, will be a member of Jacksonville’s practice squad.
Wolford, an undrafted Wake Forest product, was Matthew Stafford’s backup in the 2021 season and helped the Los Angeles Rams win a Super Bowl. When Stafford was hurt in 2022, he also made a few starts for the Rams. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers then used Wolford as a backup throughout the 2023 campaign. However, Wolford has not been signed since the Bucs dismissed him prior to the 2024 season.
After taking a horrifyingly cheap shot from Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair in Week 13 (see the video here), former Pro Bowl player Lawrence is currently in concussion protocol. The NFL has since suspended Al-Shaair for the hit.
It wouldn’t be shocking if Lawrence missed the remainder of the season because Jacksonville, tied for the lowest record in the league with a 2-10 record, is in prime tank position. With Mac Jones as their starting quarterback for the rest of 2024, CJ Beathard supporting him, and Wolford as an emergency No. 3, it appears that the Jags will proceed.
